Rotation Simulator Project

Our production tools, used in the oil drilling industry, are programmed to react to various conditions during the drilling process. When the drill string is rotated, the tool will respond by transmitting in a different format. The tool senses the variation of the earth’s magnetic field during rotation and switches modes of operation. To test this function, a magnetic field must be generated in a “rotating” pattern around the magnetometer. A quadrature oscillator circuit, amplifiers, and four coil transducers are used for generating this field. Our tools range in size from 4” to 12” OD, therefore the coil assembly must be able to compensate for these size variations. We needed to build 12 systems.

Winding the coils

No matter how you look at it, having to wind forty-eight 12” air core coils with exactly 98 windings each is a chore. For this reason we built this coil winding device. It’s motorized and has a built in counter. The coil former splits so the coil can be easily removed. After winding, the coils are hand formed into an oblong shape. FR4 plates sandwich the coils and also provide connection points.

Electronics

All of the electronics are built onto a single PCB, including the power transformer. The waterproof case presents problems in securing the electronics only because it was undesirable to drill holes in the case for mounting. For this reason, a cage was built that supports the PCB and drops into the waterproof case. The faceplate assembly holds the cage in place. The faceplate has bracing that acts as stiffeners as well as direct the air from the cooling fans to the heatsink assembly.

Design

AutoSketch (AutoDesk) was used to create the drawings, then exported to dxf. .625” grooves are endmilled into the FR4 to facilitate assembly. The parts are then soldered or epoxied together. The Quick Circuit allows us to produce a small number of pieces quickly, with a professional look at an affordable price.
